SPRINT TRAINING

A swimmer becomes faster by producing more effective propulsion while keeping drag as low as possible. Strong, well-coordinated arm strokes create most of the forward drive, especially when the swimmer catches and pulls water with the entire forearm and hand. A stable, streamlined body position helps that power turn into speed instead of being lost to resistance. The legs add extra propulsion and, more importantly, keep the body balanced so the arms can work at full efficiency.

Speed also depends on timing, technique, and energy use. When the stroke, kick, and breathing are well synchronized, the swimmer maintains momentum instead of slowing down between movements. Efficient turns and push-offs from the wall can save large amounts of time in a race. Finally, good conditioning and the ability to stay relaxed under effort allow a swimmer to hold high speed for longer without breaking down in technique.
